Response to Intervention (RtI) - Grades K-3
A prime initiative at St. Vincent de Paul School involves the early identification and remediation of language-based learning differences. Research suggests that early intervention for struggling readers may improve their long-term success in school. At SVdP, all students in kindergarten and first grade are screened for language development using the Dynamic Indicator of Basic Early Literacy Skills assessment. Additionally, all students in grades one, two and three participate in a monthly reading assessment called the Easy CBM to monitor growth. The scores are reviewed by the RTI team consisting of grade level teachers, an administrator and the reading resource personnel to determine who may need intervention in early literacy skills.
Students that are not achieving benchmark growth in literacy development are provided with small group intervention in reading by a resource teacher. The interventions take place during reading instruction time and consist of targeted Orton Gillingham or Wilsons reading instruction for 30 minutes 4-5 days a week. If students do not make adequate progress with the intervention, we generally recommend a complete educational evaluation to determine if additional support will be necessary for academic growth.
Response to intervention programs operate on a tiered system of instruction. Tier one instruction takes place in the general classroom environment and includes methods that benefit all learners, including appropriate differentiation. Tier two can take place in the classroom or as a pullout program in which the learner is receiving a targeted intervention like the Orton Gillingham ReadingProgram. Tier three of intervention requires assistance from a resource beyond the school building, this may include tutors, counselors or other therapists.
Presently, St. Vincent de Paul School has allocated resources to provide tier two resources in reading to students in grades K-3.

Student Support - Grades 4-8
For the 2024-25 school year, we piloted an additional student support program in grades 4-8. For those students in our RtI program who have made sufficient progress to continue in our program as well as students who have other identified learning needs, we are providing additional support from a dedicated staff member. Our learning specialist reviews student support plans with students, teachers and parents to ensure that they are receiving the accommodations that will help them build skills to be successful as they progress through school.
The students are exposed to different learning tools such as C-pens and graphic organizers that support their learning. Students with language based learning differences work with support staff during their weekly Spanish class.
